Scarborough Science and Engineering Week

There is only one thing we can say about the 13th Scarborough Business Ambassadors, Science and Engineering Week, WOW! Yet again, it was a really noisy one, SIOUXEE!

The young people were amazing and keen to get stuck in to learn and see what we do! And of course, primary day, where we were joined by Itsy the Robot!

It’s really great to see how many of our younger generation are interested in the technologies that are used and what the future and their future could be for companies like ours.

Rumour has it, next years will be bigger and better than ever!

Life After Deaf

Did you catch comedian John Bishop and his son Joe Bishop’s docu-film on ITV, Life after Deaf?

https://www.itv.com/hub/john-joe-bishop-life-after-deaf/10a2217a0002

Joe lost his hearing from a viral infection when he was 15 and many years later was diagnosed with Cogan Syndrome, a rare inflammatory disease of the inner ears and eyes. Joe has tinnitus and has lost 60% of his hearing and will almost undoubtedly lose all of it in years to come.

Joe lost his hearing through no fault of his own. We repeatedly say how vital audiometry testing and noise monitoring is to keep employees safe. To lose your hearing through no fault of your own, is a hard enough pill to swallow, but to lose it due to the right systems not being in place to protect people is completely avoidable.

Guy Waites

Our salty seadog has had a rollercoaster few weeks! Guy managed to dodge the edge of a wind hole and head south to cross the equator and has been going great guns! He passed Trindade, a remote island off the Brazilian coast and was on his way to the next media drop in Cape Town, SA.

Unfortunately, Guy has discovered barnacles on the hull. This was an issue for a lot of boats in the 2018 race, and a number of boats in the 2022 race so far. Guy made a call on Friday to the race office to say he has taken the decision to head towards Brazil as he has been unable to remove them. Once in Brazil he suspects he will need to lift the boat out of the water in order to remove the barnacles. This will unfortunately bring an end to Guys GGR. He will have the option to enter the Chichester class and still receive a finishers plaque, provided he finishes before 1500hrs on 24th June 2023.

It’s a gutting blow for Guy and Sagarmatha, and we’re confident Guy will make the best decision for him once he is able to see the full extent of the problem once in a port.

The GGR race office will still be in touch with Guy whilst he makes his way towards Brazil, still receiving daily tweets and weekly calls from him.

Guy’s first media footage from the first leg is live now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMq8xBQqNjw

We also saw the film release of ‘The Voyage of Madmen’. The film showcases the highs and lows of the 2018 competitors, and if sailing isn’t your thing, this film really shows you how brutal this race can be. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before it’s released in the UK!

The journey doesn’t stop here, so stay tuned to our socials for the latest on what Guy will decide! https://www.facebook.com/castlegroupltd
